An ESR study of the dynamics of local moments and conduction electrons in ScGd single crystals

Abstract

Reports 10 and 35 GHz ESR measurements upon single crystals of ScGd doped with 300 and 2400 PPM. The deduced crystal field parameter is D=-330+or-30 G, the Korringa rate b=200+or-40 G K-1, the g value 2.13+or-5 and the conduction electron lattice rate due to the Gd3+ impurity delta eL Gd=3*1011 s-s1 at.%-1. The authors' results represent a prime illustration of the Barnes-Plefka exchange narrowing theory both for the bottleneck and non-bottleneck regimes. In particular, they show for the first time the increased narrowing as a consequence of the bottleneck. Also the authors have shown unambiguously that there is a dynamic effect in the line position for this system, and illustrate this by its angular dependence.
