Abstract

This chapter highlights principles of transfusion support of the adult patient. This includes component therapy for each blood component, including granulocytes. Where appropriate, the following topics are covered: indication, dose, and ABO and Rh compatibility of the component. Selected clinical scenarios are used to illustrate transfusion support decisions in adult patients. Also covered in this chapter are explanations intended to help guide the decision to irradiate, wash, or leukoreduce a cellular blood component. The evaluation of platelet refractoriness is also discussed.
