A method for estimating depth-limited wave energy.

Abstract

Presents a method for estimating an upper limit of wind wave energy in shallow water. A depth controlled (spectral) wave height (defined in terms of the energy of the wind sea) may be estimated from depth, peak frequency of the sea and wind speed. For the shallow limit a simplifying approximation is given. Studies the selection of lower frequency cutoff and the alpha parameter. Presents example problems and evaluates applications of the method, which is considered suitable for storm seas (i.e. spread in the spectrum) (C.J.U.)
