Abstract

Surprisingly, the only psychotropic drugs used in Cuba with time depths of greater than 100yr are alcohol, tobacco, and coffee. Other mind-altering drugs and medicines, including marihuana, cocaine, and pharmaceutical sedatives, were apparently introduced into Cuba after 1900. This lack of time depth helps to explain the simplicity and encapsulated prevalence of drug use traditions in the Cuban population before 1959. -Author
