PROJECT NARRITIVE
This proposal for what would be the first NIMH Developmental Mental Health HIV/AIDS Center (D-
ARC) from the University Of Miami (UM) has exceptionally high public health significance; the D-ARC would be
situated in one of the hardest hit geographic areas affected by the epidemic, at an institution with a strong and
growing faculty of mental health HIV/AIDS researchers with ties to the local health departments, and to the
local community. The proposed D-ARC will catalyze high-impact research efforts addressing mental health
disparities, answering key questions related to HIV prevention and care starting in a domestic epicenter, with
implications that can be applied broadly, and stimulate growth to a full-fledged MH-ARC. The focus of
expertise and center activities on those most at risk for not achieving U.S. and U.N. end-the-epidemic goals is
an excellent match for the geographic area facing health and mental health disparities driving the HIV
epidemic.
